An exhibition of photographs by Juan Manuel Castro Prieto

Curator: Charlotte Urbain
The Louvre, the Orsay, the Prado, the Thyssen… Since 2000, Spanish photographer Juan Manuel Castro Prieto has been wandering through the galleries of the world’s great museums, using his camera to make highly personal images of many of the works that belong to our collective cultural imagination. This long-term project, called El Archivo de la Memoria, or “The Archive of Memory,” reflects on what society decides should be preserved and presented to present and future generations. It is also a rumination on artistic language itself; how does photography “record” a visual work? Be it a painting, a sculpture, or architecture, once a work is photographed, it becomes a photograph. For this exhibition, Juan Manuel Castro Prieto is presenting totally new work that he has made in the rooms of the permanent collections of the Musée Jean-Honoré Fragonard in Grasse.
