Fragonard Events

Through the prism of dream and memory, Carolyn Quartermaine offers us a sensory voyage, leading the public from the perfumer’s fields right into Venetian palaces, all the while evoking the freshness of an English garden. As personal as a memory and as evocative as the tell-tale signs of a forgotten path, “Where Flowers Dream” promises us a moment of intense poetry. Once she had amassed everything she loved about Fragonard’s universe (costumes, jewellery, fragrances and flowers), she made the Château de Gudanes (Ariège) her artist’s residence and the setting to prepare her work.

"I am always trying to pin down what is beautiful and rare, like a butterfly’s wing on paper... These ephemeral and delicate details, glimpsed out of the corner of one’s eye and so easily forgotten or lost, when seen again incite a shiver of recognition. They may be no more than a drawing in a book from one’s childhood, or the way that roses tumble over a high grey stone wall which hides the secret garden beyond but they tantalise and seduce and become the thing that the eye is always searching for." - Carolyn Quartermaine.
