Romantic influences in Provençal fashion

Romanticism is celebrated for the mark it left on literature, painting, and theatre. The wider distribution of the press, fashion magazines, serial novels that appeared in newspapers, and the hunger for a more accessible literature took the influence of literary movements past the city limits of Paris. As a witness to the upheavals that rocked France between the Revolution and the Restoration, the Romantic spirit also translated into daily practices, especially clothing. Between the eagerness for new forms and a nostalgia for an idealised past, this exhibition offers an overview of fashion in Provence in the first half of the 19th century.
