Evénements Fragonard
NEW ACQUISITIONS
Permanent collection
Since it opened its doors in 2011, the Musée Jean-Honoré Fragonard focused mainly on the design of its temporary exhibitions, while the rooms devoted to its permanent collection have changed little. Some recent acquisitions that are now finally on exhibit have provided an opportunity to reconfigure the museum’s layout.
Jean-François Costa was a great admirer of 18th century French art who worked tirelessly to bring back some of Fragonard’s masterpieces to his native Grasse, more than a hundred years after Alexandre Maubert’s great grandson sold these masterpieces, originally painted for Madame du Barry, and now part of the Frick Collection. Jean-François Costa also championed two other painters from Grasse, Marguerite Gérard and Jean-Baptiste Mallet, whose work was largely unknown to the general public. Today, Anne, Agnès and Françoise Costa continue with the promotion and furthering of Grasse’s rich artistic heritage, and it is because of their hard work that the museum now boasts several new acquisitions, including relatively unknown works by the likes of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Marguerite Gérard, and Jean-Baptiste Mallet.
